When do the new .au direct domains start?
At the time of this blog, March 2022 is when the new domains commence.
Registering for the new .au direct domain
The wording is ‘anyone with a connection to Australia’ can register.
This is great because it is not as straight forward right now to obtain an Australian domain. For example, for the .com.au that we register we need to show our business registration and ABNs in order to proceed.
What about existing .com.au domains?
If you already have a .com.au domain, you will need to purchase the .au domain if you want to keep it. We recommend purchasing the .au domain because if you leave it too long, there will be opportunists who will undoubtedly sweep up the domain name and while you may have other forms of brand protection in place, may not protect you from someone registering a similar domain and while not using your brand, may benefit from the similar URL in their own way.
